Xweather Weather API and Maps is Vaisala Xweather's developer offering for building weather data into applications, operational systems and AI agents. It serves energy, aviation, mining, automotive and insurance teams that need location-specific current, forecast and historical weather without running their own observation networks.
The REST Weather API has 65 endpoints covering conditions, forecasts, alerts, lightning, hail, road weather, air quality, wildfires (US and Canada), maritime weather, tides and tropical cyclones. The global conditions endpoint is generated from "a proprietary blend of data, including weather station observations, radar & satellite information, global & regional models", with history back to 2004. Lightning data comes from Vaisala's own global detection network, which records over 2 billion lightning events a year. The Raster Maps and MapsGL products in the same subscription add more than 100 map layers, including GeoColor, infrared, visible and water-vapour satellite imagery and a global radar layer that fills gaps in ground radar with satellite-derived radar.
Data is delivered as JSON, GeoJSON, CSV or TSV, by webhook, or through iOS, Android and JavaScript SDKs, Python tools and an MCP server for LLM agents.
A free Developer tier includes 15,000 accesses a month. Further use is pay-as-you-go in the US and Canada; elsewhere an API and Maps subscription costs €300 a month for 1 million accesses. Enterprise plans offer custom SLAs. Named users include the BMW Group, which shows Xweather air quality data in new BMW and MINI models, and Bosch connected map services, which uses its road weather data.
