Water Quality Analysis is Kumi Analytics' satellite-based monitoring service for coastal and inland waters, positioned alongside blue carbon, coastal MRV and ESG programs. Coastal water quality is closely coupled to wetland health, sediment dynamics and ecosystem stress, and in situ sampling alone cannot deliver wall-to-wall coverage, consistent revisit or long archives for trend analysis.
The service estimates optically active water constituents from multispectral and hyperspectral Earth observation: chlorophyll-a and related proxies for phytoplankton biomass and early harmful algal bloom awareness; turbidity and total suspended matter, to map sediment plumes from runoff, erosion or dredging; and coloured dissolved organic matter (CDOM) and light attenuation affecting submerged vegetation and benthic habitats. Multispectral baselines such as Sentinel-2 are combined with higher spectral dimensionality where available, using physics-informed indices, inversions tailored to coastal adjacency effects and bottom reflectance, machine learning, and QA-aware compositing to reduce cloud and sunglint contamination. Where field campaigns exist, retrievals are aligned with in situ profiles to tighten uncertainty; where they do not, conservative defaults are applied and assumptions stated.
Outputs include multi-temporal composites, anomaly flags that separate weather-driven noise from persistent shifts in water optical properties, and structured outputs with documented methodology and uncertainty language intended to sit alongside blue carbon and nature-based solutions evidence. Cadence ranges from weekly-style composites for bloom seasonality to quarterly reporting snapshots. Kumi Analytics states that satellite retrievals complement, rather than replace, field sampling and laboratory chemistry.
