VBS4 (Virtual Battlespace 4) is a whole-earth virtual desktop training and simulation host from BAE Systems OneArc, the company formed from Bohemia Interactive Simulations and Pitch Technologies. Live military training is constrained by safety risk, cost and range availability; VBS4 lets instructors build and run scenarios for tactical training, experimentation and mission rehearsal anywhere on a virtual Earth.
The software ships with a procedurally enhanced global terrain database. OneArc's third-party licence notices for VBS4 list the source data it contains, including EOX Sentinel-2 cloudless satellite imagery, Airbus satellite imagery, ASTER and SRTM15+ elevation data, NASA EOSDIS land cover and the ArcticDEM and REMA polar elevation models. Since 2024 it also includes Blackshark.ai SYNTH3D buildings and vegetation derived from satellite imagery. Users adjust terrain in the built-in VBS Geo editor, plan missions, issue orders to AI-controlled forces and replay exercises in 2D and 3D after-action review.
VBS4 works as a simulation host with image generators, exchanges entities with other simulations over DIS and HLA, and offers open APIs and scripting. VBS Builder Edition packages VBS with an SDK, a scripting environment and a library of over 19,000 3D models for integrators, and BattleLab delivers VBS4 with deployable hardware as a transportable classroom.
OneArc states that VBS4 is deployed by more than 60 nations. Announced enterprise customers include the U.S. Army (Games for Training programme), the Canadian, Danish and Italian armies, the Norwegian Armed Forces and the German Bundeswehr.
