SpatialKat is KatRisk's probabilistic catastrophe loss modelling software for insurers, reinsurers and brokers. It helps underwriting, portfolio management and reinsurance teams quantify losses from natural catastrophes at location, account and portfolio level, producing event loss tables, average annual loss and exceedance probability curves.
The software runs KatRisk's 50,000-year simulated event sets for inland flood (US, Canada, Mexico, Central America, the Caribbean, Europe, Australia and New Zealand), tropical cyclone wind (worldwide), storm surge (US, Australia), severe convective storm (US) and, since version 7.0 (October 2026), US wildfire. Its flood hazard comes from physical hydraulic and hydrologic modelling on high-resolution terrain: the Canada flood maps use KatDEM, a 10 m terrain model that combines lidar with an enhanced version of the satellite-derived Copernicus DEM (from the TanDEM-X radar mission) where lidar is not available. Users can change the vulnerability curves and hazard data, run current and future climate scenarios, and model complex primary insurance and reinsurance terms. The FMKat module runs losses from any other model through the KatRisk financial model.
KatRisk hosts SpatialKat on AWS and Azure, with access through a web interface and an API. It can also be installed on a client's own servers (Windows or Linux) or in the client's AWS or Azure account. KatRisk states a run time of 12 minutes for a three-peril analysis of 1.15 million locations on 25 processors. Published users include Zurich, which uses the full SpatialKat model in a production underwriting system, Wright Flood and Neptune Flood. KatRisk announced in October 2023 that it had earned SOC 2 Type 2 certification.
