Spectral Sciences, Inc. (SSI), a US employee-owned research company founded in 1981, provides contract research, development and testing for clients in government, private industry and academia. The service covers investigating novel concepts, building customised data collection and analysis tools, modelling physical processes and simulation scenarios, and running laboratory and field demonstrations while developing components toward a field-ready prototype.
For remote sensing work, SSI's Geospatial Systems and Remote Sensing team interprets image data from satellites and UAVs and applies algorithms to make data products for mapping or to add value to existing geospatial information. Listed services include region classification within multispectral or hyperspectral images, atmospheric correction of images, 3D target simulation and radiative transport simulation in 3D scenes. A related sensor specification and calibration service uses SSI's in-house Sensor ANalysis and Design toolbox (SANDBOX) to run performance trades, calibrate imagers and analyse band-pass, multispectral or hyperspectral imagery, including target detection.
As company background, SSI also took part in the US Air Force Research Laboratory's Hypertemporal Imaging Space Experiment (HTI SpX), designed to test concepts for persistent surveillance of the Earth from space, as a developer of its data processing software. The same service line also covers non-space work such as combustion testing, measurement services and rocket or missile plume modelling.
