Planet Mosaics

Planet Mosaics (renamed from Planet Basemaps in February 2026) are seamless, analysis-ready mosaics built from Planet's near-daily, 3 m PlanetScope satellite imagery. Individual scenes are often cloudy, hazy or out of date; Planet ranks the overlapping scenes for each period on quality metrics such as cloud and haze and composites the best ones on top, giving a uniform layer for consistent analysis of whole regions over time. Mosaics are produced weekly, biweekly, monthly or quarterly over customer-defined areas, and Planet aims to publish each one seven days after its period ends. Visual Mosaics are colour-corrected RGB layers for human viewing and computer-vision analytics. Normalized Surface Reflectance Mosaics carry four or eight spectral bands, normalised to a Sentinel-2-derived reference, for vegetation indices such as NDVI, land-cover classification and time-series analysis. Planet also offers an annual Global Mosaic of the Earth's landmass, SuperRes Mosaics enhanced to 2 m with Planet's generative AI model, and Custom Mosaics built from PlanetScope or SkySat imagery with chosen bands, bit depth and projection. Mosaics are delivered as 4096 x 4096-pixel GeoTIFF quads or streamed through Planet Insights Platform, the Basemaps and Orders APIs, the Planet Python SDK, XYZ and WMTS tile services, and QGIS and ArcGIS Pro plugins. The Czech Republic's Forest Management Institute used Normalized Surface Reflectance Mosaics to identify and monitor bark beetle damage across more than 150,000 hectares of forest, damage Planet puts at an estimated €2.4 billion.
