Planet Hyperspectral is Planet's analysis-ready hyperspectral data offering, powered by the Tanager-1 satellite, whose imaging spectrometer was engineered by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and whose mission is sponsored by Carbon Mapper. Tanager-1 records over 400 spectral bands across the full 400-2,500 nm visible and shortwave-infrared range at 30 m resolution, with an 18 km swath and several sensitivity modes that trade collection length for signal-to-noise. Planet states it is 3-6x more sensitive than comparable spaceborne systems. Planet describes Tanager-1 as the first commercial satellite with a methane minimum detection limit below 100 kg/hr.
The offering has two parts. Core imagery provides calibrated radiance and atmospherically corrected surface reflectance (processed with the ISOFIT algorithms) in HDF5, rectified or unrectified, delivered through Planet's APIs within 24 hours of acquisition. Methane products, derived in partnership with Carbon Mapper, provide GeoTIFF plume imagery, methane concentrations (ppm-m), plume origin coordinates and emission-rate estimates: Methane Quicklook within 72 hours for rapid leak detection and repair, and Methane Quality Controlled within 15 days for environmental reporting.
Buyers task new collections or order archive scenes through Planet's APIs with tasking credits, or subscribe to quarterly Methane Monitoring in the Permian and Denver-Julesburg basins. Beyond methane and carbon dioxide, Planet cites uses in biodiversity and vegetation monitoring, agricultural management, water-quality and algal-bloom monitoring, wildfire and drought detection, and mineral and urban mapping. Tanager-1 launched in August 2024; its data supports Carbon Mapper's public plume portal and the California Air Resources Board's California Satellite Methane Project.
