Oil Spill Detection is a remote-sensing service from EDGE-Pro, an Egyptian geospatial company founded in 2004 in Cairo, for monitoring and detecting oil spills in fresh and coastal waters and lakes. EDGE-Pro describes waterway oil spills as a major environmental problem whose costs are considerable in both economic and ecological terms.
The service is built on synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. According to EDGE-Pro, SAR can distinguish one kind of target from another: slicks are recognised by measuring their size and speed and by observing them at high resolution in one or more dimensions. Because SAR operates from long range and through clouds or other atmospheric effects that limit optical and infrared imaging sensors, it can observe the water surface when optical imaging cannot. Optical and radar sensors are then used to trace a detected spill to its source, to support decision makers in observing and preventing sea pollution.
The product page illustrates the service with an annotated radar-satellite image of an oil slick near Suez, dated 28 June 2018 and with an estimated slick area of about 327,000 m², shown alongside an optical scene of a slick off the Suez thermal power station from 30 July 2018. EDGE-Pro does not name the satellite missions the service uses. The service is requested through EDGE-Pro's contact page; no prices are published.
