Object Detection and Classification (ODC) is Synspective's analytics solution for monitoring vessels and aircraft over wide areas. Optical satellite imagery is blocked by cloud and darkness, and ground-based radar and patrols are costly and cover limited areas, which makes persistent monitoring of shipping and airport activity difficult. ODC applies AI and machine-learning analytics to synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data, which images through cloud, fog and smoke by day or night, to report the presence, location and type of vessels and aircraft across maritime zones, coastlines, airports and remote regions.
Detection and classification are powered by SATIM's OREC automatic target recognition algorithms, integrated into Synspective's analytical platform through a technology partnership announced at ODC's launch in May 2025. The input is imagery from Synspective's own StriX small-SAR satellite constellation, which the company plans to grow to more than 30 satellites by 2030 for more frequent revisits; launch examples show ships detected and labelled as cargo ships and bulk carriers in Osaka Bay and aircraft at New Chitose Airport. Synspective names maritime domain awareness, airfield monitoring, defence and security, and supply chain and logistics as the initial applications, and states that the platform is designed to extend to other object types beyond vessels and aircraft. Synspective describes its solutions as cloud-based analytics services.
