Mobile Mapping is CompassData's survey-grade data collection service for roads, railways, utility corridors and urban areas. Surveying these assets with field crews is slow and can put staff in live traffic; mobile mapping captures them from a moving platform instead.
CompassData operates a Trimble MX60 vehicle system that records high-density LiDAR and 360° panoramic imagery while driving. Integrated GNSS satellite positioning and inertial navigation georeference every point and image to survey-grade accuracy. For tight, rugged or hazardous places that vehicles cannot reach, the same kind of capture is done with a backpack mapping system. The service can be combined with CompassData's ground control and aerial LiDAR and imagery offerings.
Deliverables are tailored to GIS, CAD and engineering requirements: digital elevation models, classified point clouds (LAS/LAZ), orthophotos and 360° panoramic imagery, vector features such as road edges, utilities and signage, asset inventory databases, and geospatial metadata with accuracy reports. Work follows ISO 9001:2015 QA/QC standards and FAA-compliant processes, with deployment across North America.
In a project with Merrick & Company for Aurora Water, mobile mapping with a Trimble MX7 system covered more than 160 intersections on a budget scoped for 135, with an average accuracy of about 0.6 ft and roughly 85% less traffic control. In Winter Park, Colorado, it supplied 360° street-level views as part of a 35-square-mile aerial and mobile mapping project delivered within 90 days.
