Military Capabilities is a Janes structured intelligence dataset for defence, government and intelligence analysts who need a validated picture of the world's armed forces: who is operating what, where, and under which command. Janes sells it on its own or within its Foundational Intelligence package, alongside its Equipment and Organisations datasets.
The dataset holds global orders of battle, more than 40,000 military units with base locations, operated equipment and organisational hierarchy, platform-by-platform inventories of land, air, sea and support systems for 190+ countries, and more than 30,000 installations (bases, airfields, air defence and nuclear facilities). Records are linked, so an analyst can move from a unit to its base and its equipment to assess capability, model risk and support operational planning. Janes analysts build the data from open sources, including satellite imagery: the locations in its military bases and air defence map layers are verified using satellite imagery and monitored on a rotating basis, with the individual components of air defence sites identified.
The data is delivered through the Janes Portal, through Janes Data-as-a-Service (File GeoDB, Parquet, RDBMS, XML and graph formats, or the Janes API) for use inside customers' own systems, and through partner integrations such as Esri ArcGIS. It is licensed by annual subscription. Janes runs access pages for the Bundeswehr and the Polish Ministry of National Defence that list Military Capabilities among the products their staff can use.
