MapBiomas Alerta is a free platform from the MapBiomas network that validates, refines and documents deforestation alerts for native vegetation in all Brazilian biomes. It compiles alerts from existing detection systems, including INPE's DETER and PRODES, Imazon's SAD and its counterparts for other biomes, ISA's SIRAD-X and the University of Maryland's GLAD. Trained analysts inspect each alert on monthly PlanetScope mosaics (3.7 m) and Sentinel-2 imagery (10 m), select a before and an after image, and refine the polygon with a Random Forest classification on Google Earth Engine. A biome supervisor audits every polygon before publication.
Confirmed deforestation is crossed with public land and enforcement data: Rural Environmental Registry (CAR) properties, SIGEF and SNCI holdings, Indigenous lands, conservation units, quilombola territories, embargoed areas and IBAMA Sinaflor vegetation-suppression authorisations. New alerts are published weekly, with a report for each event and for each registered property it overlaps, showing before-and-after images, Landsat image history and MapBiomas land-cover history. MapBiomas publishes every loss of native vegetation without judging its legality.
Data reach users through the web platform, shapefile and spreadsheet downloads, a GraphQL API, a QGIS plugin and notifications for user-defined territories of interest. Between July 2023 and April 2026 the platform published 160,472 alerts and enforcement and accountability institutions downloaded 41,894 reports, according to the Amazon Fund, which supports the project. Financial institutions, BNDES among them, check rural-credit applications against the alerts: three institutions reported to MapBiomas that from 2019 to 2025 about 688,000 requests were screened and R$2.4 billion of credit was blocked where alerts were found on the applicant's property. State prosecutors and ICMBio use the reports in enforcement.

MapBiomas
MapBiomas is a multi-institutional network of universities, NGOs and technology companies that produces annual land cover and land use maps from satellite imagery, processed pixel by pixel with machine learning on Google Earth Engine. In Brazil it maps every year since 1985 from Landsat (30 m), with a 10 m series from Sentinel-2, and publishes open, free data (CC BY 4.0) on land cover, deforestation, secondary vegetation, fire, water, soil, degradation, coastal reefs, the atmosphere and climate risk. It also runs monitoring platforms for deforestation alerts (MapBiomas Alerta), rural credit, vegetation recovery and mining. The network and its open methods now span 17 countries.
