Tropical deforestation is concentrated in the Amazon, the Congo Basin and Southeast Asia, where persistent cloud cover can leave optical satellites without a usable image for weeks, and free radar-based alerts built on 10 m Sentinel-1 data often need several passes before a detection is confident. ICEYE's Deforestation Solution is a monitoring service for customer-defined areas of interest that uses ICEYE's own synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite constellation, which images day and night through cloud, smoke and darkness. ICEYE states that deforestation alerts are available within hours.
Each observation cycle delivers the area observed, polygons of new (incremental) deforestation since the last comparable observation, accumulated deforestation to date, and paired before-and-after SAR "changelook" images at 5 m resolution so each detection can be checked visually. Clearing is flagged at a one-hectare threshold, whatever its cause (mining, logging, settlement or other). Files arrive as GeoPackage and GeoTIFF through ICEYE's Solutions Suite file delivery API, and partner platforms such as Esri are also supported. Cadence is agreed with each customer within constellation capacity: one programme in Amapá, Brazil received 14 incremental observations in about a month. Tropical forest areas outside these three focus regions are assessed case by case.
ICEYE launched the service in March 2026 for enforcement agencies, conservation NGOs, government ministries and corporations, and its government page lists it as available in beta for select regions. The Jane Goodall Institute uses it to monitor chimpanzee habitat in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and has worked with ICEYE on monitoring Gombe National Park in Tanzania.
