Satellite-powered water quality and sediment monitoring for hydropower reservoirs

HYPOS (HYdro-POwer-Suite) is a web-based decision support platform developed under EU Horizon 2020 (Grant Agreement No. 870504) that fuses satellite imagery, hydrological models and optional in-situ measurements to deliver continuous water quality and sediment intelligence for hydropower and drinking water reservoirs. Monitored parameters include turbidity (FTU/NTU), total suspended matter (mg/l), chlorophyll-a (µg/l), harmful algal bloom indicators, surface temperature (°C) and Secchi depth, derived from 10–30 m resolution satellite grids with revisit cycles of 3–5 days and historical archives extending to the early 1980s. Delivered through an online dashboard at hypos.eoapp.de with open API access, HYPOS supports hydropower planners and operators in assessing sediment baselines, calculating sedimentation rates, tracking algal bloom evolution and optimising flushing operations — replacing costly field surveys and reducing investment and operational risk.
