Geotree is Mantle Labs' remote sensing and AI platform for the monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV) of nature-based carbon projects. It targets the cost of conventional project monitoring, which depends on expensive field methods, by assessing projects remotely across their lifecycle: early screening and feasibility (historical land use, carbon potential and non-permanence risk), design guidance such as stratification for ground sampling, and ongoing verification of climate impact, leakage, permanence and additionality.
The platform analyses satellite imagery on a 10 x 10 metre grid and assimilates Earth observation data into biogeochemical process models to quantify carbon stocks, carbon sequestration and greenhouse-gas emissions. Mantle Labs states that Geotree derives soil properties linked to soil organic carbon from Sentinel-2 time series, that it works with Maxar on high-resolution imagery for deforestation and tree canopy-height assessment, and that it uses Spire weather data for weather risk assessment and monitoring. Project types covered include forestry (REDD+ and ARR), regenerative agriculture, managed grazing and rice methane. Results are delivered through a portal for uploading and viewing data, with alerts during the MRV stage, together with analysis by Mantle Labs' team for project developers, carbon credit buyers, investors and standards bodies.
In 2023 Verra used Geotree in a pilot to check the flooding status of rice paddies in five sampled small-scale rice methane projects under quality-control review. In 2024 Japanese project developer Faeger agreed to use Mantle Labs' remote sensing tools to monitor its rice methane projects in Asia, and Mantle Labs won a Gold Standard tender and produced the report "AI for Sustainable Rice", which features a fully remote delineation of rice paddies in Dong Thap Province, Vietnam; Mantle Labs reports an order of magnitude higher accuracy for acreage verification.
