Geospatial & Environmental Analysis is Ocean Imaging's custom service for organisations that need to map, monitor or assess change in coastal, marine and land environments, for example after a spill or a hurricane.
For each study Ocean Imaging selects and combines satellite imagery with its own aerial multispectral and thermal sensors, drone (UAS) imagery, GIS, vector and field data. Change detection compares images taken at different times, from several satellite images collected over one or more days to track ocean current and plankton patterns, to regional vegetation change over decades. After Hurricane Irma in 2017, the company used a time series of 10 m Sentinel-2 multispectral imagery to document vegetation damage and recovery in the lower Florida Keys, in a study with Florida International University researchers published in Estuaries and Coasts. For spills, it compares NDVI from repeat aerial imagery of affected and unaffected control areas.
Results are delivered as maps, databases and custom GIS systems. Ocean Imaging has built Web Map Servers for the Oil Spill Prevention and Response division of the California Department of Fish and Wildlife, and runs an ArcGIS Server platform tested with Common Operating Picture servers including NOAA's Environmental Response Management Application (ERMA). It also carries out environmental impact assessments for land and ocean projects.
