Geoneon Vegetation is a vegetation monitoring service from Geoneon, based in Hobart, Tasmania, that works from satellite and, where available, aerial imagery. It maps where vegetation has been cleared, how it recovers after disturbance or rehabilitation, and its condition and structure (cover, canopy and height) across landscapes, assets and project areas. It addresses a gap left by greenness indices such as NDVI, which do not measure vegetation structure, and by airborne LiDAR and field campaigns, which are accurate but costly and hard to repeat over large regions.
At its core is a deep-learning model, trained on LiDAR-derived height data, that estimates mean vegetation height at 10 m resolution from Sentinel-2 imagery composited over three-month periods; comparing successive height layers shows where vegetation was removed and how much. Geoneon also maintains a Tasmania-wide 10 m vegetation-height dataset built the same way, with January 2023 and January 2024 editions used to compare clearing and regrowth year on year. A sub-metre tier applies the approach to very-high-resolution imagery for tree canopy segmentation and height. Each project is configured around the question and may combine temporal analysis, vegetation indices, classification and GIS analysis. Outputs are delivered in standard geospatial formats (GeoTIFF, Shapefile, WMS/WFS web services and web maps).
For the Pacific Community's Digital Earth Pacific programme, Geoneon produced a quarterly 10 m vegetation-height dataset for 2020-2025 across several Pacific Island countries to track clearing, degradation and regrowth. Its satellite canopy mapping for the City of Hobart compared 2017 and 2022 and informed the City's State of the Canopy report, which recorded a two per cent canopy loss on private land. In Launceston it established a 2021 canopy baseline of about 19.5% for the City's Urban Greening Strategy.

Geoneon
Geoneon is a geospatial company based in Hobart, Tasmania, founded in 2018, that combines earth observation, machine learning and spatial analysis to turn environmental data into geospatial intelligence for preparedness, planning and prioritisation. It delivers project-specific analysis across four solution lines (vegetation monitoring, wildfire, heat and flood exposure) for government, infrastructure and international-development clients, including the Greater Hobart Bushfire Exposure Index and the Tasmania Wildfire Index.
