EOxMaps

EOxMaps (styled EOX::Maps on its own site) is a global web-mapping service from EOX IT Services that supplies background and overlay maps for applications that need to show geospatial data in geographic context. Background and overlay are kept separate so that an application's own data can sit between them: the background conveys land use and topography, the overlay adds labels, borders and streets.

Background layers include annual Sentinel-2 cloudless mosaics from 2016 to 2025, which EOX builds from Copernicus Sentinel-2 imagery by selecting cloud- and shadow-free pixels and correcting colour and BRDF effects; NASA's Blue Marble (MODIS) and Black Marble (VIIRS night lights); and Terrain, Terrain Light and OpenStreetMap maps rendered from OpenStreetMap, Natural Earth and elevation and land-cover data such as SRTM, ASTER GDEM, EU-DEM and ESA GlobCover. Overlay layers add labels, borders, streets, coastlines and hydrography; the main label overlay comes in a dark version for the terrain maps and a bright version for the marble maps.

Layers are served through OGC WMTS and WMS in Web Mercator and WGS84 for web clients such as OpenLayers or desktop GIS such as QGIS. The public service is free with attribution and rate-limited under heavy load. The 2016 and 2017 Sentinel-2 cloudless layers are CC BY 4.0; the 2018-2025 layers are CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 (non-commercial), and commercial use of them is licensed through EOxCloudless. On request EOX provides custom maps and projections, offline maps for an app or internal network, and dedicated services under an SLA. It has supplied EOxMaps as a dedicated service to the European Space Agency for the Copernicus Sentinel App and the Copernicus Open Access Hub (closed in 2023).
