eoapp AQUAFARM is a web application from EOMAP for seaweed, shellfish and finfish farming. The success of farmed species depends on water conditions such as sea surface temperature, nutrient availability and water quality, and cage systems are sensitive to water pollution and algal blooms, including cyanobacteria and red tides. EOMAP notes that empirical site selection can take up to 12 to 18 months.
The app builds on satellite-based Earth observation and complementary sources to aggregate, process, analyse and visualise environmental data for a farm site and a wide radius around it. EOMAP's aquaculture water-quality layers include chlorophyll, turbidity, sediment concentration and water temperature, complemented by large-scale ocean data on salinity, nitrate, oxygen, wind, waves and currents; EOMAP states that the app integrates environmental data from the Copernicus Marine Service and that in-situ measurements can be integrated within all of its frontend features. A map view displays the farm site and lets users choose the EO-based data source and toggle between layers; a monitoring view tracks key parameters; a heatmap tool combines parameters such as chlorophyll, sea surface temperature, salinity and nitrate with user thresholds to identify site suitability, optimisation potential and production scenarios; and users can set their own thresholds and be notified when they are exceeded.
EOMAP positions the app for two applications: operational monitoring with early warnings, aimed at aquafarmers and insurance companies, and site assessment, where current and past time series show environmental trends and the suitability of a region for a given type of farming. Published use cases include multi-year site assessment in Scotland and a multivariate heatmap analysis of environmental parameters and harmful-algal-bloom risks in Greenland. On its aquaculture page EOMAP publishes a customer statement from Seaweed Solutions: "Satellite-based measurements are new for us. They are extremely insightful for monitoring our seaweed farms."
