eoapp AQUA is EOMAP's web application for generating, visualising and analysing satellite-derived water quality data for lakes, rivers, reservoirs and coastal waters worldwide. It addresses the limits of field sampling, which is costly and often misses fast-developing events such as harmful algal blooms.
Users define an area of interest, the parameters, the observation period and the satellite sources. EOMAP's physics-based Modular Inversion and Processing System (MIP) then retrieves parameters including turbidity and total suspended matter, chlorophyll, a harmful algal bloom indicator, Secchi disk depth, surface water temperature, CDOM, trophic state and water extent. Sources include Sentinel-2, Landsat, Sentinel-3, MODIS/VIIRS and Planet SuperDove imagery. New scenes are typically processed 3 to 12 hours after recording, and archive analyses reach back up to 40 years.
The app offers a map viewer, virtual stations with time series, a Baseline package for long-term statistics, Monitoring subscriptions for continuous processing of new scenes, and threshold-based email alerts. Users can upload in-situ measurements to compare with the satellite data, export time series as Excel or CSV, and download OGC-conformant raster data for use in a GIS. EOMAP also offers API access for premium accounts.
eoapp AQUA launched in April 2024 as the successor to eoLytics Water Quality. It was developed under the ESA InCubed project EOSmart with partners including Xylem and Fugro, and was a top-3 finalist for the German Innovation Award 2025. Users quoted by EOMAP include the Environmental Ministry of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, LUBW (Baden-Wuerttemberg) and Hidroeléctrica de Cahora Bassa. EOMAP's water quality monitoring services are also included in Planet Labs Germany's contract with the German Federal Ministry of the Interior and Community (BMI) and the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG).
