ENVI is desktop software from NV5 Geospatial for processing and analysing geospatial imagery. Image analysts, GIS professionals and scientists use it to turn satellite, airborne, drone and terrestrial data into information they can act on. It reads more than 200 data types, including panchromatic, multispectral, hyperspectral, thermal, LiDAR, SAR and full-motion video, with dedicated readers for satellite missions such as Sentinel-1, -2, -3 and -5P, Landsat 8 and 9, MODIS and NPP VIIRS, PlanetScope, SkySat, Pléiades, WorldView, BlackSky, TerraSAR-X, EnMAP, PRISMA, EMIT and Tanager.
Built-in tools cover calibration, atmospheric correction, pan sharpening, RPC orthorectification and image registration. Guided workflows then handle anomaly detection, change detection, classification, thematic change, feature extraction and viewshed analysis. The spectral tools, with spectral libraries and more than 70 off-the-shelf spectral indices, are used for target detection, material and mineral identification, vegetation health, water quality, oil-slick mapping and methane-leak detection.
ENVI is written in IDL. The ENVI API lets users add their own algorithms and automate batch processing, a Python client library (ENVI Py) runs ENVI tasks from Python, and the no-code ENVI Modeler builds reusable workflows. ENVI analytics can also be run from Esri ArcGIS Pro. Optional modules add deep learning, SAR processing (SARscape), atmospheric correction, feature extraction, crop science, photogrammetry, NITF and DEM extraction.
NV5 case studies describe Korea University mapping South Korea's forest types nationwide from Sentinel-2 imagery with ENVI and its Deep Learning module, and The Nature Conservancy's Caribbean Division using ENVI to classify coral reef, seagrass and mangrove habitats. ENVI runs on Windows, macOS and Linux. The first year of maintenance (support and updates) comes with a purchase and is renewed annually; prices are given on request.
