Emil is GMV's hardware and software suite for inspecting airport radio navigation aids: ILS localizers, ILS glide slopes and VOR beacons. Air navigation service providers (ANSPs) must check these signals regularly against ICAO tolerances, and flight inspection campaigns are costly; Emil extends the intervals between them and reduces runway occupancy during inspections.
Emil runs ground-based inspections from a 4 m mast on a vehicle (localizer and VOR) or a 22 m mast on a trailer or van (glide slope), and UAS-based inspections from a drone payload, with a demonstrated integration on the DJI M350 RTK. The Emil software configures the Rohde & Schwarz ILS/VOR analyzer, loads predefined inspection procedures, guides the operator along GIS-based waypoints and starts and stops recording automatically, supporting one-person operation. Multi-frequency, multi-constellation GNSS RTK positioning geolocates each measurement with sub-decimetre precision and is used to compute reference values. Results are shown in real time and post-processed into automated reports against the tolerances of ICAO Annex 10 Volume I and Doc 8071.
GMV positions Emil as a complement to flight inspection that supports preventive and corrective maintenance, troubleshooting, performance trending and pre-flight-inspection checks, and states that its UAS option has shown performance comparable to flight inspection. According to GMV, Emil is in use by four ANSPs and has inspected 40 navaids. GMV names ENAIRE airports including Madrid-Barajas and Barcelona-El Prat as users, and reports delivering Emil to CORPAC (Peru) and SANS (Saudi Arabia) in 2021.
