DTN GIS is a catalogue of weather map and feature services that weather-sensitive operators add to their own Esri ArcGIS maps, dashboards and apps, so they can see storm, lightning, ice and fire threats against their assets without building their own weather data pipelines. DTN hosts the services on its ArcGIS Server infrastructure on AWS and exposes them as more than 150 ArcGIS REST endpoints, with OGC WMS and WFS endpoints and GeoJSON, KML and GeoTIFF output for non-Esri tools such as Leaflet, Mapbox and OpenLayers.
Most layers come from radar, the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network, surface observations and forecast models. Two layer families rely on satellites: a Global Infrared service that merges satellites from around the world to show cloud-top temperatures, and fire hotspots across North, Central and South America detected by satellite imagery, offered alongside fire perimeters, a hot-dry-windy index and soil moisture.
DTN adds its own products: quality-controlled radar mosaics for North America, Europe, Australia and Japan, storm, hail and lightning nowcasts, the SPIA ice damage index, ten-day global forecasts and Storm Risk Analytics, a machine-learning layer that predicts utility outages up to seven days ahead. The services plug into ArcGIS Velocity, Dashboards and Watch Center, and DTN provides 24/7 support and a service level agreement on uptime. Central Electric Cooperative in Oklahoma used DTN's TornadoTrax data with Esri tools after the May 2016 tornadoes to send crews directly to damaged areas; damage assessments and cost predictions that took days to compile were completed in hours.
