Custom Basemaps

Custom Basemaps is CompassData's basemap development service. Utilities, energy companies, law enforcement, defence (DoD) organisations and GPS-based fleet and asset tracking operations often work from generic or outdated maps, or wait on their GIS department or other agencies for current imagery and basemaps. CompassData instead produces a basemap for the customer's area of interest and workflow, combining its global 10 cm x,y,z photo-identifiable ground control with open-source data, commercially available imagery and customer-furnished datasets. CompassData's satellite imagery data sheet says the basemap solution begins with satellite imagery and integrates other data layers, such as roadways, on top; the satellite sensors are not named.

Delivered layers can include road systems, terrain, land use, point elements and other custom geographic layers. The provider's brochure lists specialised layers such as points of interest, crime and law-enforcement data, human geography (census, income, cultural and economic data) and preparedness data (E911, pre-planned routing, response times, shelters and evacuation).

Basemaps are delivered in ArcGIS formats into the customer's own environment, including behind the firewall and on premise without web connectivity, with individual layers and view levels that can be customised for different teams. CompassData states that entire countries are delivered in weeks and small areas of interest in days, and every basemap includes a predesigned maintenance schedule to keep the data current.
