Ground movement from subsidence, shrink-swell soils, landslides and legacy mining damages ageing infrastructure and property, and checking it on the ground means repeated site visits. Countrywide Mapping is SatSense's continuously updated InSAR ground-displacement dataset covering whole countries.
SatSense processes radar imagery from the Copernicus Sentinel-1 satellites with its own InSAR algorithms, developed from the research of its University of Leeds co-founders, into average velocities and displacement time series running from late 2014 to the present. The United Kingdom dataset has been updated since 2019, with new data every 6 days. The New Zealand dataset is delivered with GNS Science (now Earth Sciences New Zealand) and updated every 6–12 days, and a Permian Basin (USA) edition is updated with each 12-day overpass. SatSense states average-velocity accuracy of approximately a millimetre per year.
Buyers can draw an area in the self-service Marketplace and download velocity maps and time series as shapefile or CSV, explore the data in the Analysis web platform, or take a WMS layer or REST API feed (GeoJSON in, JSON points out) into ArcGIS, QGIS, AutoCAD, BIM software or their own databases. SatSense also offers bespoke risk indices for shrink-swell and mining subsidence, alerting on concerning movement, and help with interpretation.
In a blind comparison with Network Rail's peg monitoring at about 50 sites on the Folkestone Warren landslip, SatSense InSAR and peg classifications agreed in 80% of cases. SatSense's Marketplace is ISO 27001 certified.
