ConnectedCosmos is Open Cosmos's low Earth orbit (LEO) connectivity constellation for governments, institutions and companies that need secure, resilient communications and clear custody of critical data. It combines point-to-point broadband with direct-to-device IoT. Optical inter-satellite links form a gatewayless space mesh that routes data directly between satellites, physically bypassing subsea cables and terrestrial ground infrastructure, and the network is built to withstand interference from jamming and cyber attacks. It will use high-priority Ka-band spectrum filings from Liechtenstein, which Open Cosmos brought back into use with the launch of its first satellites at the start of 2026.
Open Cosmos's existing Earth observation satellites already carry IoT payloads, and every satellite in its constellation, including the ConnectedCosmos satellites, is designed to carry one. The IoT service, launched in March 2026, combines data from ground IoT sensors with satellite imagery so that users can see why a sensor reading is changing: for example when overseeing energy, utility and rail networks, tracking wildfires, protecting oceans or monitoring offshore conditions. Open Cosmos is working with partners and early adopters in government and industry to explore applications. Its IoT capability comes from Connected, a Portuguese narrowband-IoT start-up Open Cosmos acquired in 2025, whose technology is based on standardised protocols such as 5G NB-IoT and mioty. Data products are tailored to each customer, and pricing depends on the scale and requirements of each deployment.
The broadband backbone is still being deployed. The first two satellites launched in January 2026; 192 satellites will form the core of the constellation, with more than 96 planned in orbit by the end of 2028 and full global coverage targeted for 2030. In September 2026 the UK Government Commercial Agency named Open Cosmos a supplier of satellite connectivity via ConnectedCosmos on Lot 2 of its TacSys (Tactical Communication System) framework.
