Catastrophe Risk Analytics is KatRisk's project-based service. Instead of licensing KatRisk's catastrophe modelling software, a client commissions KatRisk to run its models for a specific question and deliver the results. KatRisk describes the work as one-time catastrophe risk analytics and modelling calculations for insurance, reinsurance, financial institutions and government agencies.
The service suits organisations that need a modelled view of hazard or loss for a transaction, a study or a policy decision without running a catastrophe model themselves. KatRisk states that it has been the risk modelling calculation agent for all six FEMA/NFIP annual catastrophe bonds, totalling US$2.225 billion. It provided flood data for Public Safety Canada's 2022 report Adapting to Rising Flood Risk and loss analytics for McKinsey climate change studies. It supported Milliman studies on mortgage default and credit risk, and Milliman used KatRisk's models in a study of undisclosed flood risk in real estate commissioned by NRDC. A related Event Response service provides hazard footprints, forecasting and loss analytics for real-time events.
The analyses draw on KatRisk's catastrophe models. The published flood studies used its flood and storm surge models, which can simulate both current conditions and climate change scenarios. KatRisk's wider model range also covers tropical cyclone wind, severe convective storm, wildfire and earthquake. The flood models simulate water movement over high-resolution terrain. In Canada that terrain combines lidar with an enhanced version of the satellite-derived Copernicus DEM where lidar is not available.
