Bhuvan is the national geoportal of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), run by the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) in Hyderabad. It gives government departments, researchers and the public one place to view, query and download satellite imagery and satellite-derived maps of India, with a focus on planning, monitoring and evaluation in governance and development.
The Bhuvan 2D and 3D viewers serve Indian Remote Sensing (IRS) imagery as layers, including Cartosat-3 and Cartosat-2 series high-resolution data, Resourcesat LISS-III (24 m) and AWiFS (56 m) mosaics and EOS-04 SAR, together with administrative, hydrological, road and settlement layers. The Open Data Archive offers free download of IRS data of 23 m and coarser, such as LISS-III and AWiFS ortho products and the Cartosat-1 DEM, plus geophysical products for land, ocean and atmosphere.
Thematic Services publish national databases built by NRSC with state remote sensing centres, including land use / land cover at 1:250K, 1:50K and 1:10K, urban land use, wastelands, geomorphology, flood hazard zonation and water bodies. Users can query them online or consume them as OGC WMS/WMTS services in QGIS, OpenLayers or ArcGIS. Disaster Services cover near-real-time flood and cyclone monitoring, landslide inventories, forest fire alerts and drought assessment. Token-based APIs provide village geocoding, LULC statistics and routing, and mobile apps support geotagging of field assets and vehicle tracking.
Bhuvan is free and, in the Department of Space's words, "not a commercial venture". In 2016 the department reported more than 70,000 registered users and use of its tools and datasets by more than 30 central ministries and about 20 state governments.
