Betterview is Nearmap's property intelligence and risk application for property and casualty (P&C) insurers. It addresses the cost and delay of physical property inspections by letting underwriting, loss-control and claims teams assess properties remotely, at new business, renewal and claim time.
Betterview applies AI and computer vision to Nearmap's own high-resolution aerial imagery, captured from aircraft, to identify roof shape, size and materials and more than 130 property features such as pools, debris, solar panels and vegetation. It scores roof condition with the 100-point Roof Spotlight Index, grades property risk for hail, wind, cyclones and bushfires (peril scores that Nearmap says are pre-filed, validated and approved in over 30 states), and notifies users when changes are detected on insured properties. Custom rules flag properties using these attributes together with Partner Connect third-party data (2,500+ data points on perils, replacement costs, permits and more) and the insurer's own policy data. In November 2022, before its acquisition by Nearmap, Betterview announced that ICEYE synthetic aperture radar (SAR) satellite data would be available to all users through Partner Connect, for example to identify flood-damaged properties after an event before inspectors arrive.
Insights are delivered through a web analytics interface, a REST API, PDF reports, an external data warehouse, single sign-on and pre-built integrations with Guidewire PolicyCenter, Duck Creek and Socotra; Portfolio Intelligence aggregates results across a whole book for benchmarking. Aerial coverage reaches up to 88.5% of the US population, 96.5% in Australia and 81% in New Zealand. Named customers include Frederick Mutual, Rockford Mutual, Arden and Church Mutual Insurance Company; Frederick Mutual reports a 26.8% year-over-year loss-ratio reduction.
