EIC Accelerator 2026 - Short proposal
The EIC Accelerator supports SMEs, including start-ups, to develop and scale high-impact deep-tech innovations with a combination of grant and investment funding and business acceleration services. Applications are generally submitted by a single eligible company. Proposals can go through the Open route or a predefined Challenge; the 2026 Challenges include "Deep Tech for Climate Adaptation" (urban extreme heat, climate-smart agriculture, water scarcity, flood and coastal protection). The deadline shown is the last short-proposal cut-off of the 2026 call; the 2027 call follows.
Description
The EIC Accelerator funds later-stage technology development and company scale-up for high-impact innovations that could create new markets or disrupt existing ones. It particularly targets innovations based on scientific discoveries or technological breakthroughs that require substantial, long-term financing and face difficulty attracting private investment. The technology must already have been tested and validated in a laboratory and another relevant environment, corresponding to at least Technology Readiness Level 5 completed. Support combines grant and investment funding with business acceleration services and is intended to help attract further investors. Applicants may apply through the open route, which accepts any technology or application field, or through predefined technology challenges.
What this means for cities and regions
Cities and regions are not identified as eligible applicants and therefore have no realistic direct applicant role unless acting through an eligible company structure described in the call. They could potentially participate outside the formal applicant structure as pilot sites, prospective customers or users of an SME’s innovation, although such arrangements are not specified in the text. Space-enabled companies could seek support for innovations using satellite data, navigation or connectivity because the open route accepts any technology field, but the call does not explicitly identify or require any space service.
