Global Methane Emitters Tracker

The Global Methane Emitters Tracker (GMET) is a free, public database from Global Energy Monitor (GEM) that estimates methane emissions at fossil fuel facilities worldwide and links satellite-detected methane plumes to the specific facilities they came from. The December 2025 release records 18,023 methane-emitting assets in 166 countries, covering coal mines, oil and gas extraction areas, gas transmission pipelines and LNG terminals, and 3,474 methane plumes.

Annual estimates are bottom-up. Emission factors are applied to GEM's coal mine and gas infrastructure trackers: coal production and gas content for over 5,000 mines, an IPCC Tier 1 factor for pipelines and throughput-based factors applied to the capacity of LNG terminals. Oil and gas extraction areas are not given their own factor-based estimate; they are linked to the Climate TRACE estimate for the larger field that contains them. A separate estimate gives the potential methane emissions if each field's proved and probable reserves were produced. A companion sheet links coal mine methane mitigation projects to specific mines.

Plume attribution starts from methane plume products published by Carbon Mapper and the UN Environment Programme's International Methane Emissions Observatory, observed by the EMIT, Tanager, EnMAP, PRISMA and Sentinel-2 satellites and by airborne imagers. GEM analysts compare each plume origin with Google Earth imagery and GEM's asset data to assign it to a mine, wellpad, plant or terminal. For the December 2025 update they reviewed every public high-resolution plume within the known or estimated boundaries of coal mines, and associated over half of the plumes near coal mines with specific in-mine infrastructure.

The data are updated annually, downloadable under a CC BY 4.0 licence and shown on an interactive tracker map, with a GEM.wiki page for every asset and plume. GEM reports that Indonesia's Institute for Essential Services Reform used the data in advocacy for better methane monitoring regulation.
