Aviation applications such as avionics, electronic flight bags (EFB) and flight simulation need airport imagery that is accurate enough for safety-critical environments. CompassData's Airport Imagery Archive is a database of orthorectified satellite imagery covering more than 700 airports worldwide, at 30–50 cm pixel resolution.
CompassData states a horizontal positional accuracy better than 0.85 metres and processes the imagery in compliance with FAA DO-200A. Each product is verified with CompassAA, the company's own accuracy assessment tool, which supports least-squares minimisation to confirm image alignment and orthorectification against FAA accuracy standards. Imagery from the archive is available off the shelf for rapid delivery in GeoTIFF, JPEG2000 or custom formats, for aviation mapping, flight planning, navigation systems, airport infrastructure analysis and simulation.
From the same archive, CompassData digitises airport features such as runways, taxiways and terminals, with full attribution for aviation software and systems. CompassData says the archive is aimed at airport operators, avionics integrators, aviation authorities, EFB providers, the Department of Defense and military agencies, and flight simulation companies.
