Open source satellite-based validation and monitoring of Brazilian LULUCF, Biomass and Deforestation.

MapBiomas is a multi-institutional network of universities, NGOs, and technology companies that maps land cover and land use change across territories. MapBiomas Platform classifies the entire Landsat archive on Google Earth Engine to produce annual 30-metre land cover and land use maps of Brazil, covering every year from 1985 to the present.
The platform combines a forty-year land cover baseline with thematic monitoring layers to support enforcement agencies, public prosecutors, financial institutions, researchers, and companies managing supply chains. Mapping is organised the way Brazil is — dedicated teams lead each biome and cross-cutting theme, coordinated by the institutions that specialise in them, including IMAZON, IPAM, SOS Mata Atlântica, LAPIG/UFG, and the Vale Technological Institute.
-Brazilian Class Legend: Around thirty classes tuned to national vegetation and cropping, including savanna formation, restinga, mangrove, and separate soy, sugarcane, coffee, citrus, rice and oil palm classes. -Biome-Level Calibration: Classification models trained separately for each biome and theme by the institution with the deepest field knowledge of it. -Thematic Layers: Deforestation, secondary vegetation, pasture, fire, mining, surface water, soil carbon, degradation, urban extent, and climate risk over the same series. -Territorial Query: Returns statistics for any territory, including CAR-registered rural properties, municipalities, watersheds, conservation units, and uploaded geometries. -Open Method and Data: Maps, statistics, ATBD methodology, accuracy assessments, and source code published under CC-BY via browser, bulk download, or Google Earth Engine.
What distinguishes MapBiomas Platform is that it was built to answer Brazilian questions — reviewed by a scientific committee drawn from Embrapa, INPE, IBAMA, and CEMADEN, and established as the shared factual baseline that agencies, prosecutors, banks, and companies argue from rather than argue about.
