BGI-Monitor

BGI-Monitor is a monitoring platform developed by BitaGreen to track the health and performance of urban green infrastructure such as green roofs, facades, parks and urban trees. It fuses satellite Earth observation with ground-based IoT sensors and high-resolution climate models to give asset managers, building owners, cities, urban planners and green-solution providers a continuous, real-time view of vegetation condition, soil moisture and urban heat. By replacing costly manual inspections with integrated remote and in-situ sensing, the platform enables proactive maintenance, smarter planning and demonstrable climate-adaptation impact.

Satellite imagery detects plant stress and growth patterns through vegetation indices and surface-temperature trends. Sentinel-2 imagery feeds NDVI and related vegetation indices, while Copernicus ERA5 provides baseline land surface temperature and atmospheric variables. Ground IoT sensors measure soil moisture, temperature and plant-stress markers, and Galileo positioning can optionally improve sensor mapping accuracy. The platform turns these inputs into hotspot maps, early-warning alerts and drought/heatwave scenario simulations delivered through automated dashboards and reports. BGI-Monitor was developed as a completed Kick-start Activity under the European Space Agency's Space Solutions programme, led by BitaGreen (Belgium), targeting infrastructure and smart cities, environment and natural-resource use cases, with pilot projects underway with green-solution providers.
